Skizo wins overall result for Weekend

With over cast weather the day was cool but the racing heated. Skizo had Bradford in his motos and managed to beat Bradford in all the motos and the semi.

In the final before the gate dropped you could hear a pin drop as the crowd waited to see if there SA Boys would be out front. Skizo with his "african pull" emerged out the first corner with Bradford and Stumpfhouser hot on his wheel. Bradford made a pass on the second last corner to eventually take the win with Skizo 2nd and Stumpfhouser in 3rd with Dean Holdstock in a close 4th.

It was an awesome weekend and Sifiso did us all proud winning 14 out of the 15 heats he raced in and 2 out of 3 finals

Skizo Dominates Legs 7 & 8 of SA Champs

Two of the world’s biggest BMX racing stars, Randy Stumpfhauser and Joey Bradford had no answer for Nhlapo at rounds 7 & 8 of the SA BMX Championship.

The two Americans who raised the standard of competition significantly against a host of top South Africans, led by the likes of Sifiso Nhlapo and Gavin Lubbe.

Saturday 29th of September under a cool over cast sky saw Sifiso Nhlapo dominate legs 7 & 8 of the SA BMX Champs in front of the home crowd.

Leg 7, saw Nhlapo pull his American challengers down the first straight. Seventeen-year-old Bradford, only turned professional at the end of 2006 has racked up an impressive 14 world titles and 12 US national titles during his years as a junior. Bradford who is also the 2007 world championship silver medalist in the junior category made a move on Nhlapo on the second last corner but a fighting Nhlapo passed Bradford back on the last corner to take the win in front of a home crowd who were on there feet cheering from the drop of the gate.

Leg 7 Final Result

1. Sifiso Nhlapo
2. Joey Bradford
3. Randy Stumpfhauser
4. Gavin Lubbe

Stumpfhauser who is currently ranked eighth in the world and is the 2007 world championship bronze medalist could not hold the pace of the young South African in Leg 8 of the SA BMX Championship and finished a close second behind Nhlapo ahead of Bradford and Lubbe who has been living and racing in the United States and was runner-up to Bradford at the 2006 US Junior Nationals.

Leg 8 Final Result

1. Sifiso Nhlapo
2. Randy Stumpfhauser
3. Joey Bradford
4. Gavin Lubbe

Todays action sets the stage for thrill a minute racing tomorrow which is the MTN SA Grand Nationals

Other good BMX news is South Africa will host a round of the UCI BMX Supercross World Cup in 2009 and the UCI BMX World Championships in 2010.

GRAND NATIONALS .

This weeekend will be the last round of the nationals series to be held at the KEMPTON PARK BMX TRACK. Alot of work has been put into the track the past month so the track should be good for this weekend. Thanks too all those that helped out and a BIG THANKS TO ARRON HOLDSTOCK for the hard work he put in.

The weekend should hold some exciting racing for the locals seeing as that we have THREE riders from outside the boarders JOEY BRABDFORD, RANDY STUMPFHAUSER and GAVIN LUBBE. So it will be fun to race them on home soil hahaha.

On the flip side it has been raining alot over the past two days and it will be interesting to see how the track holds up after all the water from the rain. I also got a new LID which is slang talk for helmet .Ill be supporting the MTN colours this weekend.

Hope everyone has a great weekends racing and GOOD LUCK to all the riders that will be racing this weekend.

Training today.

Today went off really well. EUGENE and i made our way to the riders tent in the morning to sign me in for this weekends race and to get all the info which all went smoothly.

The track was not looking to bad from the top of the start hill so i was sure it was to be a good training session. Group A started things of and the guys looked like they were riding the track pretty good so it was good to watch the other guys do stuff on the track first so you kind of have an idea of what you need to do.

Group B training started soon after that and it was going good untill it got really windy and some guys started to come off so the cut our session short because of the wind and guys crashing we didnt even get to do some gates so some of the team managers were upset about that. We were told that we will start the training off tomorrow so thas ok and they have shifted the time a little just to suit the windy condtion.

Tomorrow will be the time trials which only qualifies the top 64 riders into the race on saturday so hopefully that goes well .

Worlds Race Review - Cruisers

With cooler weather and all the South African riders ready to give everything they have for their last chance to get World Numbers on the technical track here in the Juan de Fuca Recreation Centre it wasn’t long before the racing got underway.

Our two youngest riders out there in the 12 & Under classes, Bryce Stiebel & Kayla Eggar held there own to some hard motos. Bryce racked up a 5 – 6 – 5 which didn’t see him advance any further but Kayla on the other hand was riding like a champion scoring a straight set of 2nds in her motos allowing her to advance to the semi’s. In her semi Kayla came home safely in a 4th position which guaranteed her position in the final where she finished 6th.

In the 13-14yr boys it was Kyle Dodd & Ryan Stiebel who rode in different heats but new they were in for a tough three motos as there gates were stacked up. Ryan who seemed to get out the gate pretty quickly lacked some steam towards the end and eventually finishing his 3 motos with an 8 – 8 – 8. Kyle on the other hand was hoping to use his experience from racing before Worlds to make the best of his situation and eventually finishing in 6 – 5 – 5 and disappointed to have to pack up.

15-16yr boys saw Kyle’s older brother head up to the start to take is gate and hopefully pedal abit harder to keep up with the boys which are twice his size its almost like the story of David & Goliath. Lloyd put in a good effort and rode his heart out which nobody could’ve expected more from him, an unfortunate crash did not see him advance either. Final positions were 6 – 5 – 7.

17 + Men, this saw a different Jordi out there who came out the gates firing away with some smooth, safe and skilful riding. Racing in Las Vegas and Pre Worlds definitely seemed to help Jordi settle down quickly and bring some fine results home. Positions 3 – 2 - 3 in his motos, a 3rd in the quarters and a 2nd in the Semi had all the South African supporters screaming and shouting for him. Mixed with abit of misfortune in the final Jordi brought his bike over the line in 7th position earning himself a World Number.

Then it was our older guns out there on the circuit, Eugene Eggar, Alan Dodd and Pieter Meyer. Eugene was the only one out of the trio which just missed making the ¼ with 5 – 5 – 5 being his moto results meant he had to pack up early for the day. Alan and Pieter were in separate motos, Alan with consistent safe results 3 – 3 – 3 comfortably moved him into the ¼’s. Pieter on the other hand used the other approach were he was going to go ball to the walls and make sure he got atleast one win in, which he did with moto results 3 – 1 – 2 which saw him meet up with fellow country man Alan in the quarter finals. The gate dropped and Alan pulled down the straight coming out the first turn with the leaders, its not often you see these guys ride aggressively but with a lot on the table it was all elbows knees. Pieter unfortunately got boxed out and was left trying to catch up through the field, Alan on the other hand found the right line in the second turn and emerged in 4th. With his sites set in making the final they all came onto the last straight the “Redline Rhythm Section” pretty even. Alan was looking good to finish 3rd when he gave one too many pedal strokes and came down 20m from the finish line. Pieter finished in a well deserved 6th position and Alan a misfortunate 8th.

The race of the day had to be Sharlene McGilvray who shows that if you have a goal set in your mind it is possible. The whole week we have been told about how she is going home with the World Number 1 plate. With consistent moto’s 2 – 2 – 2 it was straight to the final and Sharlene new a good start was going to be the trick. The gate dropped and Sharlene shot out it like she was tied to a circus katty….1st straight coming out the bottom in first, 2nd straight she has maintained her lead, 3rd straight all the South Africans are standing in their seats cheering……then the unthinkable happens, her foot unclips and she gets passed and with a drag to the line finishes in 2nd position. It wasn’t 1st position but it is the highest World Number that we bringing home.

The Elites where up next, and what a show this was going to be with a lot of the top riders not even making quarters because of the high level of racing. It was time for the Cruisers to be pulled out and bars to be bumped and a new World Champion to be crowned. The juniors were off first and our Gavin Lubbe who was still riding with an injury showed exactly why he was chosen to represent South Africa in the junior category. With three solid consistent motos 3 – 3 – 3 Lubbe advanced to the ¼ no problem. Dean Holdstock was set in a hard gate and although he has got a lot stronger and his pace still being extremely fast. He unfortunately with the lack of international race experience managed to only score a well deserved 5 – 5 – 5 in his motos and disappointedly didn’t advance to the ¼’s. Gavin on the other hand with his American race experience racked in 3 – 3 – 3 which was solid motos and allowed him to advance to the ¼;\’s. With a 5th in the ¼ Gavins racing came to an end.

Sifiso Nhlapo, today was going to be his day if lady luck got locked in her pantry cupboard. In moto 1 getting the outside lane 7 he new he had to power down the main straight to stay out of trouble. With solid results 2 – 1 – 1 Skizo was looking for a podium. In the ¼ we could see why he was crowned a previous World Champion and he finished 1st. In the semi Skizo pulled out the gate and slowed halfway down the start straight with a puncture in the rear wheel……finishing 7 meant that he did not make the final and was also sent packing.

Its been a great Worlds and we would just like to congratulate all the riders/athletes for all the effort they put in to make their countries proud.
Sifiso commented "I would like to thank all my sponsors that have made it possible for me to get this far, Mr Price - MTN - Oakley - Intense/Answer - S&M Bike Parts - National Lotto Board - CSA - NBMXC. I would also like to thank Big A, Greg and my family for believing in me and lastly "Coach" and Marie for making a home away from home for me and getting me to where i am."

Worlds Race Review - Elite 20 Inch

With a sell out crowd and perfect weather, the atmosphere at the Juan de Fuca Recreation centre in Bear Mountain was electrifying. All the Elite Riders where getting charged in the morning warm up by the cheers, horns and cameras from all the fans that lined the outer skirts of the track and filled the grandstands.

In the morning warm up Gavin Lubbe who is currently living in California and is constantly making their mains and finishing on the podium was looking very fast and definitely had the speed to make it all the way through. Dean Holdstock who is currently one of SA top junior riders, also had a trouble free warm up session and was very positive in showing some good results to what he has worked so hard towards with his coach Herve from the UCI Training Centre. Then the big guys came out and Sifiso “Skizo” Nhlapo’s day started off with a string of misfortune. First his feet unclipped and pulled out the pedals twice, too much power perhaps….. He then tried a new line on the Pro Section and the soil was soft and with a head wind Skizo landed short and came down pretty hard. Two minutes later he was up and in the gate to get on with practice, as the gate dropped he powered down the start only to puncture before the first jump.

First South African Junior rider up in Heat 2 was Gavin Lubbe, with a good gate draw it was all set for a good first heat from Lubbe starting on gate 1. Cleanly round the first turn and onto the Pro Section which caught Gavin out and he crashed hurting his crown jewels. After being checked out by the doc and was told he……. Gavin pulled out a brave ride in run 2 to get a well deserved 2nd position. In his 3rd heat riding abit uncomfortably Gavin made a small mistake in the second Pro Section and that unfortunately cost him from moving into the 1/8.

Our second hopefull in the Junior Elite Men was Dean Holdstock who has taken 3 months out of school to prepare for Worlds. This just seemed to be one of those days for Dean where he couldn’t find a rhythm and get upto race pace. The young South African fought hard in each heat with final results being 5 – 6 – 5 and not advancing to the 1/8 either.

Next up was our former 2005 Junior World Cruiser Champion Sifiso “Skizo” Nhlapo. They say that it happens in threes so with his trio of bad luck in the warm up behind him, Sifiso was looking forward to fighting his way right through to the mains. Stacked with most probably the hardest gate line up with the likes of Thomas Allier (European Champ), Danny Caluag (ABA Series Leader), Donny Robinson (Northern American Champ) and Mike Brabant (USA) it was going to be three intense heats for Skizo. Heat 1, lady luck had not yet come to visit Mr Nhlapo as a Mexican rider went down and took Skizo with him. Remounting as quick as he can and now one straight behind the field Skizo rode his heart out and passed Canadian rider Aaron Lepp metres from the line to gain a valuable 5th position. In heat 2, we saw the SA powerhouse put in his ride of the day finishing a close 4th behind Donny Robinson, Danny Caluag & Aaron Lepp. With confidence back where it should be and some luck back on his side which proves very important in BMX racing Skizo had a good gate choice for the last heat of the day. With the crowds going nuts the gate dropped for the last heat, Skizo riding a good safe race finished in 4th allowing him to advance to the 1/8 where he finished a good solid 4th to advancing to the Quarters. This is were lady luck pulled the plug and he got shoved out in the first corner finishing in 8th position and not advancing to the Semi’s.

Sunday is the last day of racing here at the 2007 World Champs in Victoria BC and all the SA riders are very determined to bring some more World Numbers home and improve on their 20 inch results.

Look forward to bringing you the results from tom.......

Worlds 2007 - Practice

Hi Guys
Its Mark here Sifiso has asked me to post this on his behalf, as he has a big day tomorrow and is in bed already......

Well this is the weekend, one of the milestones leading upto the Olympics and to make sure that all the hard work that Sifiso, Herve and Marie have put in has paid off.

Sifiso has had a pretty mellow week this week, going off to ride at another track mid week to get some training done. Today was their practice and the first time the spectators got to see the Pro Section being used wich has massive doubles. I think the track surprised alot of riders as the jumps have no room for error and you have to really nail it sweet otherwise you break your rythym and speed.....

Tomorrow will see 3 of SA top BMXérs take on the rest of the World namely Dean, Gavin and Sifiso....we also need to congratulate all the other SA riders for their strong rides and never giving up till the end.....

So until tomorrow, lets hope i am writing this with a picture from the podium.....

See ya all soon,

Yetti
PS: pics above are of Dean, Gavin & Skizo....the other one is of Herve & Marie (coach)

Getting some love in the semi on saturday!!!

Race weekend in France!!

The weekend went off pretty good for me and the rest of the UCI Team. The weather was really warm like 30+ all weekend so that was a really big change for us but it was better that rain so we were Happy to be racing in the sun. On Friday i raced cruiser and was doing well i won all my motos and Qualifying rounds . In the final i had lane 1 which is the inside, so i had a pretty good chance of winning the EUROPEAN CRUISER TITLE . When the gate dropped i had a good pop and was leading the group till the pro section, i was going faster than i have all day and over shot the pro section double and lost some speed and got past but managed to hold on for 2nd place so i was happy after the race. So i finished second on that day.

On saturday i had pretty hard motos but managaed to hold on till the semi. In the semi i had the outside lane choice which is a huge disadvantage on this track so i had to pull hard down the first straight. I had an average gate and got run outside by the other guys and didnt qualify for the main. I was content with the days racing seeing that i had learnt alot on this day.

I was sure that sunday was going to be a different day for me. But the cards got delt way different than what i had imagined. I felt really good the whole day but crashed in the quarter finals not transfering to the semi so my day was over real quick on sunday.

Just want to thank my MOM. Coach HERVE KREBS for giving me pull for the past three years and his wife Marie Krebs for looking after me like her own son. And all my fans for your support while i have been here in EUROPE. And MARK SQUIRE for taking care of business and being a really good friend to thanks YETTI!

Next stop is the WORLD CHAMPIONSHIPS IN CANADA next weekend ..

Sunday.

Today was the easy day of the week we just had to do a recovery ride in the afternoon just to turn the legs and have a good recovery for the upcoming week seeing as we will be traveling to France for the European final championships on Tuesday. So i woke up this morning and it was pouring with rain and i was planning to visit Marie and Herve so i waited for the rain to stop and made a run for it luckily the rain didnt catch me so that was cool. When i arrived at thier place i took a shower and got change and we just lazed around watch T.V had some lunch so the day went by pretty slow and chill which is just what i was hoping for so i was stoked. I left thier place round about 7PM so the ride back was nice and easy and the rodes were quiet.

So to sum up my sunday i can fairly say that it was relaxed which is cool to have with a hectic week ahead fill with travel and racing so hopefully it will do me well.

Skizos new look.

Saturday!!

Woke up this morning and it was nice and sunny so the day was of at a good start.Started the day off in the weight room with a long gym session and i felt ok i guess the group was alot smaller the usual because the europeans are at there national championships this weekend so it was alot more queit this time. I felt ok in the gym the excersises were ok so my leg handled it good.

In the afternoon we had easy session on the track so it felt good to loosen up after the hard session in the morning and then did some gate with a race feel to it so it was a good excersise for the mental state.

so tomorrow we have a recovery ride in the morning so that will be chill.
